Kinnikinnick Farm

With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, andpowerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm. I highly recommend this film to anyone looking to learn more about the food they eat.

From the early 1950s on, the female tractor driver was one of the most frequently seen symbols of Chinese socialist modernity. Known as the nüjie diyi (女界第一) model workers, the 'female-kind-first', they were part of the group of 'the first' women to be trained in work involving heavy machinery. Liang Jun (below left), one of China's first female tractor drivers, was introduced to Chinese audiences in 1953 in posters, anthologies and school texts.

This tiny jar of coconut oil traveled 17,834 miles to New Jersey from the Philippines. That means 1,070,040 gallons of gas were burned on that flight. Makes you rethink making that jerk chicken and coconut oil pasta for dinner.
